Daria woke to silence, which filled her with panic.

She hadn’t meant to go to sleep, only to sit down on the couch for a moment. She’d cut up some bananas for the girls and set them up watching telly on the couch beside her. Lulled off by the sounds of Peppa Pig, Daria had only meant to close her eyes for a second.

She sat up straight. The DVD had finished and the screen was flashing its screen saver. For a moment she sat, trying not to even breathe loudly, listening for any sign of which way the girls had gone. They couldn’t get upstairs, the gate at the bottom was still closed. They wouldn’t be in the kitchen, not silently. And then her eyes fell on the glass sliding door that led out to the back lawn and the gate to Thomas and Spectre’s house. The sliding door was open, just a child’s amount but it was open.

Every outing with Phoebe and Cassandra was a mission, but a mission Daria and Noah faced head on, without fear or faltering! Well, usually without fear. Well, not a lot of fear. They were adults, goddammit, and surely two adults could keep control over two two-and-a-half-year old twins at least most of the time.

Today they were out hunting. They’d successfully ran down a couple of new sets of clothes and shoes for the girls, who were definitely starting to catch up with their growth spurts. They’d stocked up on cough syrup for Phoebe’s reoccurring cold, and, the biggest mission of all, they’d successfully completed a complete circuit of the supermarket without anyone starting to cry.

Daria was so seriously on top of this motherhood business!

But she definitely needed a sugar hit. “Hey Noah,” she said, eyeing up the ice cream stand in the middle of the food court. “You’ve been so well behaved today, I think I should buy you an ice cream.”
They had come to Bali for Daria's birthday and it was their last night in the gorgeous country. Noah had something special planned for the both of them. He took Daria out for a nice dinner that was their kind of fancy. When they were both full and had partaken in a few fruity drinks, Noah whisked her off to a Balinese night club. After dancing for hours, Noah suggested that they take a walk on the beach. He had ulterior motives, but he covered it all in just wanting to get away with her.

Merry, Geordie and Ellie were leaving for Aberdeen in the morning. Daria had a few things Merry needed. Money, mostly. Money and a car. Geordie drove Neil's van to Daria's, and waited outside while Merry went in to talk to her sister.

"You are not going to Aberdeen by yourself!" Daria exclaimed (quietly, since the babies were asleep upstairs). "That is - that is - no."

They walked in the sand in front of the resort they were staying in. The waves lapped at the shore and the moon glittered on the water. Noah wrapped his hand around Daria's and he grinned. "I really love being here with you," he said softly.
