This should be backdated a bit but I don't know how much!

As much as Peter hated flying, he loved going to the airport when it meant picking up someone he loved. His family was returning from their vacation in Spain and Peter could barely keep still while he waited in the international arrivals lounge of Heathrow airport.

With the memory of last night still replaying happily in his mind, Peter rises from his bed and, after finding something suitable to wear so he doesn't permanently scar any of his children who might be up by now, he leaves the bedroom in search of breakfast. The house is still quiet, which these days means that Lydia and Anna are still asleep. At fifteen and thirteen, the sisters who were once close now spend most of their time fighting. Loudly.

Caleb was sitting on the sofa beside Peter, telling his step-father all about his school day when Klaus re-entered the Kemp family home. He had been gone for three days and part of Peter hoped that the poor man had gone back to the Beyond where he belonged. His father was dead, and he had only been brought back by Peter's angelic wife as a mistake. A mistake that should have righted itself a long time ago.

Peter's family was feeling the doldrums of the After-Christmas Blues, but it did help to know that they would be jetting off to Valencia in the early hours of the morning. Spain was like a place of solace for all of them. A place where they could relax and enjoy their family. It was especially important now, after the loss of David. Family mattered, and tomorrow they would be literally surrounded by it.

Lydia entered her parents' room just in time to see her father bend over in a fit of coughing, which looked like it was rather uncomfortable. She leaned against the wall with a worried look on her face while Peter proceeded to cough so hard it sounded like he was going to lose a lung.

No, you are not okay! )

Peter had fallen asleep on his bed while reading, which was not an uncommon occurrence to say the least. When he felt the bed move, he awoke with a start, and the book which had been resting on his face, fell to his lap. He opened his eyes frantically, though when he took in the view of his wife crawling up towards him, he relaxed. "Aly," he breathed, his tone relieved.

Better )
Aly was terribly nervous. She was going home, for better or for worse, to see if she could managed to keep up this 'I'm all better' thing when not surrounded by clinical staff who would simply lock her in her room if she misbehaved. She was fairly sure Peter would do no such thing, and he had other people to be paying attention to anyway. Though she did take some solace in knowing that he was bound to be watching her closely now, no matter how many other people he did have to focus on. And Peter probably wasn't the only one.

Smoke coated the inside of Peter's nostrils, making breathing quite a difficult matter indeed. Smoke and ash surrounded him, obscuring his view of everything that was not within six feet of him in every direction. Ash rained down on him from above, and it coated everything that did come within his view with eerie greyness. His eyes were red and they stung, and Peter had to keep them trained on the concrete at his feet with his eyes opened no wider than tiny slits. His lungs laboured with the lack of fresh air, and everywhere around him he could hear Things in the distance. Moving. Breathing. Rumbling. Watching him.

Life in the Kemp household had not been entirely pleasant of late. Peter was mourning the loss of his best friend, and he was doing his best to work through it to be there for his family. Because even while he grieved, Aly was also grieving. And the way things were, she seemed worse off than he was. Peter was doing most of the work at home, which he certainly didn't mind, though it gave him little time to help Aly let alone himself.
