Kait came to her decision rather suddenly considering all the time that she had been thinking over it. Carefully think through every single step before even that first initial step is encountered. Counter everything before one of those things can strike you down.
No more.
It wasn't even something that her father said this time. In fact, since she had stopped seeing Renee, things had appeared to go back to their comfortable normal between Simeon and Kait. They were having more suppers together without her father so solely locked in his work study. Things would be almost perfect now.
Of course, if things were perfect now, Kait wouldn't be walking towards The Cauldron as all these thoughts crossed through her brain. Every time she saw Scarlett replying to something that Renee had written, it sent a sharpness through her, not quite jealousy, but perhaps that was exactly what it was. It was worse because she knew that she had no right to feel that way. Scarlett had been nothing other than understanding throughout every issue that had come up between her and Renee, right from the beginning. She hated feeling this way.
And she hated the idea that both of them talked about her being under her father's thumb when of late, she had been seeing neither one of them.
Above her, as she opened the shop door, a bell jingled. She stood in the doorway for a moment, before stepping to the side and waiting for her eyes to adjust to the dim light. Renee had said this place was expencive, but that wasn't an issue. She knew that she could trust this place because of everything Renee had said about it.
"Hello there."
The voice seemed to come straight out of the darkness, but after Kait had blinked a couple of times, she could see that the voice actually did have form; form of a middle age appearing man.
"H-hello. I would like to buy a book from here?" Damn. Her voice sounded far more quavery than she would have liked. Somehow, she didn't think Renee ever came in here sounding like this.

"Lots of books here," the man replied enigmatically. He stepped around the counter, drawing a little closer to Kait. The light fell on him a little more directly from that position, allowing Kait to make out his features just a little more. Not bad looking, but in an entirely creepy way. Jet black hair trailed past his shoulders, and he had a scraggly mustache and goatee to match. His clothes of a similar dark hue blended in with the shadows of the shop. Intimidating and charismatic...
"Did ya have anythin'... specific in mind?" he asked with a raised eyebrow. Pretty little girl. Nervous. Out of her depth. Was she going to use Daddy's credit card? Wait and see...

Stiffening herself to make sure that she didn't take a step back from him, Kait lifted her chin stubbornly. She was a patron here. Payment for goods. He wasn't about to try anything intimidating!
Specific. Right, that was the question that had been asked. Trying to clear her throat unobtrusively, Kait drew herself up to answer. "Specific. Yes. I want something on courage." Broad, well she knew that. But at least this way, there was bound to be something that would fit her needs.

"Courage..." Marcel mused. He looked directly into the girl's eyes, then slowly allowed his gaze to roam up and down her body. Her body language as well as her words showed resolve. She probably didn't need extra courage... just needed to know how to tap into it. This girl had a fighting spirit, one she had never used. Had someone stifled it? Or was she simply used to getting what she wanted without a fight?
He murmured something about a fire ritual and motioned her to follow him over to a shelf filled with bottles of strange looking liquid. After a moment's thought, he pulled down one that contained a thick, orange substance. It was about the size of a regular bottle of bourbon - 700 mL, give or take.
"Liquid courage," he grinned. "But not the kind you get down the Dog and Pony," he added, tilting his head vaguely in the direction of the local pub.
"Although..." he hesitated a moment, about to hand it to her but holding it centimetres from her hands. "There is a ritual that goes with it. Think you can handle it?"

Kait took a deep breath as the container was placed above her hands. This was it then.
"Umm, I think you are mistaken," she murmured, looking up and finding herself instantly transfixed by his eyes on hers. Did it actually feel as though he were looking inside of her? "I only want the one spell. I don't mind paying however much for it... I just... that whole bottle for just one little thing as well as a ritual?"

Marcel narrowed his eyes a little. Not with any sense of wrath, merely deep in thought, trying to see what this girl was getting at.
"I wouldn't be drinkin' the whole thing if I were you," he warned, although his mind was obviously elsewhere. "Might end up jumpin' off a cliff just to find out what would happen, see?"
He took a few steps away from her, heading back to the counter. Placing the bottle down, he turned back to her. "You take a shot of this at the most. Might work without the ritual. Might not. Your choice."
His eyes flicked away for a moment, then back to her. "You know, for a little extra, I could help you with the ritual. It's not hard. All you gotta do is tend a fire."

Kait's eyes widened at his words. Jump off a cliff? Her mouth even began to mouth the words before she clamped it firmly shut. Didn't do to just speak words without thinking. Kait had the feeling that that applied especially much here.
"Tend a fire. I can do that," Kait said with surety for herself. Her eyes darted to the bottle that remained out of her reach. A part of her was starting to think that if she didn't stop saying stupid things and fast, he just wasn't going to give her any of it at all. "And yeah, I'll take the ritual too. Whatever you've got."
There. That sounded forceful, finally.

Marcel stared at her for a moment, his eyes betraying nothing.
"Follow me. Bring that with you," he added as an afterthought, indicating the bottle. He pulled back the curtain and led Kait through the eerie back area. Statues leered and strange weapons seemed to lean close and threaten her with no discernible intelligence behind them, but that did not make them any less frightening. It was only a few moments, however, before he opened the back door onto a surprisingly wide outside area. It made sense when you thought about it... this strip of shops backed onto a heavily wooded area that eventually joined onto the more cultivated areas of Regents Park. A high fence protected the area from sight on both sides, and extended back into the woods. The back end of the fence could just be seen through the trees.
Marcel placed his hands on his hips and breathed in deeply, like a king surveying his territory. His face was completely serious, however, when he turned back to Kait. "How much time are you able to spend here, girl? The more the better, keep that in mind."

"Beauty," Marcel mused with raised brows. His gaze turned to her. "Yes. Beauty." There was no expression upon his face. It was anybody's guess what he was thinking.
His manner became business-like once more, and he took a few steps away from Kait. "I'm not gonna lie to you. This ritual is usually a twenty-four hour job. But you look like a busy girl. You wouldn't give it that if I told you to. So. You're gonna tend a fire. I'll help you. But first, you gotta make the fire. Normally, that's the first twelve hours of the ritual. You don't just find wood, you find wands. But I think we can take a little short-cut," he grinned. It was not an entirely comforting sight.
"We'll gather enough wood to make a big one," he continued, motioning her to follow him into the woods. "That way you can look after it longer. When you feel you're ready, we'll get to the potion. Come on, sweet'eart. Big Bad Wolf ain't gonna eat you up."

A lot of what Marcel just said to her went straight over her head. For the moment, at least, it seemed like just a good idea to follow the older man. Wands? What was he talking about? Like, magical wands? No, surely not. Renee wouldn't talk about this place as she did if the owner was a person who liked mythical creatures and their wands. He must mean something else.
"I'm ready," she emphasised when they stopped for long enough for her to face him again. "I'm ready to get straight onto the potion. Today even."

"I never intended anythin' less," Marcel responded, dropping one last load of wood on top of the pile they had created. With Marcel's strong arms lending their assistance, it hadn't taken too long. The fire would burn for a good long while. Long enough, at least, to set Kait in something approaching the right spiritual space for what was to come.
"Now, I want you to tend this fire as you would a child. Give it love, watch it grow. Discipline it if you need to. Don't let it get too big for its boots, but don't let it fall down, either. Be good to it, and it'll be good to you. It's important that you understand the fire. Fire is passion, power, domination. But it can be vicious and cruel if you let it. Fire is the element of courage, that thing in your breast that makes you stand up and fight when all you wanna do is flee. This'll make an Amazon of you, girl," he grinned.
Still smiling, he produced a lighter and set one of the branches on fire, then handed it to Kait. "Here, girl. Do the honours. Make a fire. Then, when you're ready... you drink. But don't go swigging out that bottle willy-nilly. Just tell me when, and I'll make it ready for you. Take as much time as you need. Try to meditate while you do it, if you can."
He stepped back, allowing her space to begin.

"Good... good," Kait murmured as she watched everything that he was doing as though it were the most important thing to be beheld. Give it love, watch it grow? This was a fire they were talking about, right? And discipline. This was exactly the reason Kait had never really gotten quite into it when Renee had started talking about witchy stuff. Some of it seemed even too far fetched now when she was dealing with it up close and personal.
Yet, as her eyes were consumed by the flames, a sort of calm understanding of what she meant to do swept over Kait. Yes, she could be that Amazon. Finally, here was her chance.
Slowly taking the lighter from Marcel's fingers, she barely noticed when their finger tips touched and a spark went between them. She was hypnotised by the starting of the fire. It suddenly didn't matter that she had never before meditated in her life; really didn't know what she was supposed to do in order to start. When she needed to know, she would. And when she was ready to drink, he would pass it to her.
Taking a deep breath, Kait was already taken in by what she had committed herself to doing.

Marcel watched, pleased that the act of starting the fire was having a calming effect on Kait. That was good. It meant she would identify with it more easily. Some people got skittish around fire. But this girl would love it. She would let it touch her soul. She would become the fire.
He lost track of the time that passed. He was as entranced with Kait as she was in the fire. He watched her eyes as they reflected the gradual settling of the clamour in her mind. Soon, they would be still. Her jaw had been set at first, strong and resistant. That was what she wanted to be, but not what she needed to be at this moment. Gradually, it too had relaxed. Her expression remained strong, but serene. No part of her body was fighting now. She stood relaxed, only moving to tend the fire. Sharing herself with the fire. Beautiful.
Had she begun to sway on her feet? Maybe, almost imperceptibly. Darkness was rapidly falling. It was getting cold. It would be harder to tend the fire. Normally, that would be a good thing. It would make the bond stronger if the user had to work harder to maintain it. But however impressive this girl had turned out to be, she was still a novice. And from the impatience she had initially expressed, he gathered she was likely pressed for time.
There was no noticeable change in her as he filled the shot glass with the liquid. Picking up the discarded lighter, he set it aflame, and held it in front of her. That got her attention.
"Drink," he commanded. "You must not be afraid. There are properties in the potion that will neautralise the burning. Be brave. Drink it now, before you lose your nerve."
His eyes locked onto hers, onto her soul. Now was the turning point. Now was the moment that would define who this girl really was.

Then again, the calmness found her and settled deep into her like a large, lethargic cat. He had not lead her astray as yet. With a small smile, she took a shot of the potion. No going back now.

A wide smile spread across Marcel's face. She had done it. The little girl had actually done it! He gently took the glass out of her hand as she swallowed the potion. No ill effects, as far as he could see...
The fire would die down slowly now, even unattended. He would see to it properly once she was gone. She was his immediate concern right now.
Still being gentle with her, he laid a hand on her shoulder. "Girl. That's it. You're done. Now you can do... whatever it was that you wanted to do. Once you've paid me, that is," he added with a wink. "How do you feel?"
