Ever since Cai didn’t have to go to proper classes and was supposed to study by himself at home, Faye spent a lot of time creeping about. She still had to go to school and this miffed her, since reading at home sounded way better. ‘Specially since Cai seemed to mostly spent lots of time in the shed playing with tools and make a lot of sawdust and swears.
But after school Faye and Roe crept about doing a lot of spying.
They knew there was something going on between Rachel and Cai. Well, Faye knew because she knew all about relationships because her parents were really good at making lots of them with different people then forgetting how to keep them from breaking. She’d told Roe all about her parents different relationships with people because Roe was such a good listener, because she never interrupted. Roe agreed there was something going on worth spying on, but Roe agreed with most of Faye’s ideas.
They almost definitely weren’t boyfriend-girlfriend because Cai would have told Nonnie and Dom about having a girlfriend and they would have told Faye. Nonnie and Dom were big on honesty. Faye put a lot of trust in how Nonnie and Dom ran their house. Besides if Cai was being a boyfriend to anyone surely it would be Zoe, right? Faye really liked Zoe. She knew Zoe liked her as well.
Cai said one time: “Zoe can seem a bit distant, I hope she didn’t come off as mean to you?”
Faye informed him: “Zoe’s not mean to me – Zoe’s only mean to people who deserve it,” to which Cai looked at her like she was planning some kind of takeover with Zoe.
So, if Cai was dating anyone, he should date Zoe. But he wasn’t. And Rachel had been over to his house three times since high school ended. And she was really pretty, and her hair was straight in a way Faye really wanted for herself.
Were they meeting in secret? Were they studying? Faye was going to find out.
She had a good thing going here with Nonnie and Dom and Cai and Roe, she didn’t want secrets to ruin it.
