Aly was dancing. Her movement was somehow diminished because she was dancing with her daughter in her arms, but she was dancing all the same. And in her opinion, dancing with Lauren was better than dancing alone in every single way. "That's my girl," Aly said to her daughter in Spanish. Lauren looked relaxed and happy in Aly's arms; something that wasn't all that normal with Lauren. Usually she was upset and crying about something. "We're going to have a party for your brother's third birthday tomorrow," Aly continued. "And there will be cake and presents. Your daddy is spoiling him rotten because that's what your daddy does. He'll spoil you rotten on your third birthday too, yes he will." Aly leaned forward and she touched noses with Lauren's, who giggled.
Peter had caught some of that, and Aly was aware because she had sensed his slightly angelic presence. She would have said all that stuff about Peter even if he hadn't been there, however. And she turned to him, smiled, and switched to English, even though he understood Spanish perfectly. "Hello, my darling."
"Hi," Peter waved at her, and then he stepped forward to kiss his daughter.
"You've been avoiding me," Aly said slyly. She reached out with one hand to ruffle his hair, and then she used both hands to lift Lauren up high. "Daddy's been avoiding me, yes he has! Tell him he's a silly man."
"Dada!" Lauren said, grinning widely at him.
"Well, she got half of it," Peter said, amused. He took the tiny girl from Aly and bounced her around a little. "She's in a good mood."
"We were dancing the tango," Aly grinned. "The baby tango, anyway. She likes being dipped."
"I'll remember that." Peter looked up at his wife, still bouncing the baby on his hip. "I came here to tell you I didn't want any more kids."
"I had a feeling," Aly said gently.
"But then I saw you dancing around with Lauren and it was so beautiful-"
"I know," Aly smiled and she leaned forward to kiss him. "You've been avoiding me because you know you actually want to say yes, and you were trying to put it off. Because you don't think another baby is wise, but you want one anyway."
"Is that why I feel like I'm being torn in two?" Peter asked, looking miserable. "Aly, when this wasn't a possibility, I didn't mind. I'm happy with the kids I have. With the life I have. But then I see you dancing with our daughter and it's beautiful and we could bring another child into that... But...there's the Templar and there's demons and angels and werewolves and vampires-"
"-and brain tumours and diabetes and heart attacks and crazy siblings," Aly countered, bringing up all the things that would have occurred even if the rest of it didn't exist. "And if all the rest of that stuff wasn't in our lives, you wouldn't be here because that first thing would have finished you off before our first wedding anniversary." Aly pressed herself up against Peter and she smiled. "Sweetheart, if you still think this is a bad idea, even if you want another child, then I can handle that. But I don't think you should use what could happen as a reason. That stuff is always there. It never goes away, and no matter who you are, 'what if' exists. If we want to do something that might bring a little light into the world, why is that such a bad thing?"
"It isn't," Peter replied quickly. "Aly, it isn't. But that...that what if stuff..." Peter sighed. "I have to think about it. What if the Templar get ahold of me and I spend another...however long under the ground!?"
"Then we'll come find you," Aly replied easily. "And what if you don't and you always wonder what could have happened here?"
"I fear your logic," Peter admitted. "I really do."
Aly chuckled and she kissed his lips. "Peter, I don't want to make you crazy. If you dont want to do this-"
"But I do!" Peter interrupted and then he bounced Lauren a little more because he had been louder than he meant to be. "I do, I just....I'm terrified too!"
Aly grinned and she flounced over to him, pulling him and Lauren into her arms. "Oh, darling, it's going to be wonderful! Don't be scared, it will be okay. We'll always be okay!"
If only that were true.
