Jude paced across her room.
Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, until it was nothing more than habit and she wasn't sure she'd even be able to stop doing it if she wanted to.
The little box was sitting on her bed. It looked out of place. It looked menacing. She spared it a glance, small white box on her dark green bedspread, and then looked away, continuing to pace.
What was she going to do? This wasn't really happening. No, not really. She was dreaming. She was making it up. She kept hoping that maybe her period really was just late. She knew it was unlikely with her regular she usually was, but it wasn't impossible and so she clung to the hope.
She crossed her arms as she paced, rubbing her palms quickly up and down her bare forearms. She hadn't eaten in about two days and she'd barely slept. She knew she must look a mess. After all, how much had she eaten since this whole thing with leaving home had happened anyway?
She jumped when she heard the knocking on her door.

Deirdre stood in the hallway, wringing her hands. With everything that had happened in the last 24 hours, how did it seem like this was the most important? The most scary? Because it was Jude. When the door opened, Deirdre tried to act casual, but as all bad liars do, she wasn't good at it.
"Hello. I am here now."

Jude nodded and didn't make any smart remarks. She didn't seem to have them in her tonight. "Yeah," was all she said. She looked over to the box and then at the floor and, finally, at Deirdre. "Tell me everything is going to be alright."

She nodded and walked over to the bed, picking up the box and turning it over in her hands. She'd read the instructions at least a dozen times but now she read them again. She nodded once more. "Alright. I can do this. Just a- it's okay." She looked at Deirdre. Lie to me please, Deirdre. Tell me I'm safe here. Tell me that this will all be nothing tommorrow. Please, Deidre

"It is okay, Jude. And I'll be here through all of it." She would be. She knew at any second that her father could get her, and she knew she probably SHOULD take Jack's offer and fly to Cape Town, but she couldn't leave Jude. Jude needed her. Here she would stay.
"Everything will be just fine, you'll see."

Jude tightened her grip on the box and nodded once more, walking to the bathroom and walking inside. She paused and looked back at Deidre. "I'll do this bit alone," she told her and closed the door with a quiet click.
Come on, Jude. Get it over with.
She opened the box and read the leaflet inside and then did as instructed, all the while her body shaking with nerves. Don't think about it, don't think about it.
When she was done and put the stick down on the counter and washed her hands, looking at her haggerd reflection in the mirror. This wasn't right.
Slowly she opened the door. "It's done," she told Deirdre. "Now I have to wait." she seemed to sound a lot braver and together than she felt.

Jude didn't shake her off but swallowed and reached for the piece of paper. "Um," she scanned. "It says...3 minutes." She couldn't meet the other girl's eye. She felt so dirty and...ashamed. What must Deirdre think of her? She must know who was responsible for this. She must know because or else she would have asked. Jude knew that much. She kept reading. "Um, one purple stripe means negative and two mean postive." She wouldn't say pregnant.
She slid down the wall and sat with her back to the bathtub, trying not to even look at the little white stick by the sink.

Three minutes? Almost up. God, this was the longest three minutes on the face of the planet. Deirdre fiddled with the end of her shirt and tapped her toe until she noticed Jude staring at it.
"Sorry..I-" Sorry would never be enough. She took a seat on the floor next to Jude to wait.

Three minutes. Too long. Too long! It was like the entire world had been taken over by her screaming nerves and tense muscles. No words, no thoughts, just terror and shock and oh god, what do I do? What do I do???
She watched the clock on the bathroom wall.
A minute and a half to go.

Deirdre wanted nothing more than to pull Jude into her lap and kiss her. But that wasn't going to accomplish ANYthing except maybe Jude running out of here for good. She sighed.
"No I...I was tapping. I tapped." Fucking hell. Why the hell did the test take 3 WHOLE minutes!? It was cruel. Deirdre eyed the clock as well, cracking her knuckles and cursing herself for doing a crappy job of taking care of her friend. She tried to give her a reassuring smile. Soon. They'd know soon.

And there it was. Three minutes.
Jude has stopped breathing somewhere and she looked at Deirdre. "Three minutes."
Slowly she stood up from the floor, not looking at Deirdre again, and walked over to the bench where the stick lay. She looked at Deirdre again and then lifted the stick, breath still held.
Negative.
Jude breathed. And then she laughed.
And then she fainted.

Deirdre knelt down trying to bring Jude around. "Jude! Wake the hell up!!" Finally she splashed the girl's face with water from the sink. "WAKE UP!"

And, now that Deirdre mentioned it, she was really hungry. She wondered if that was why the room was spinning. Probably that and lack of sleep. "Food." she nodded. "I could eat."
Then, without knowing quite why she did it, she grabbed Deirdre and pulled her into a tight hug, pressing herself against the other girl and clinging. "thankyou," she breathed into Deirdre's shoulder.

"Do you like onion?"
She felt a little silly. Not 10 minutes ago, she'd been scare dout of her mind and now she was asking the girl if she liked onion. Still, Jude seemed so happy, she wasn't going to dwell on it. She was actually enjoying taking care of the girl. A little picture of domestic bliss? Maybe not that.
