Melissa had excused herself from the group on their first night in the city of Paris and closed the bedroom door behind her, leaving them in the living room.
The first number she called was Veronica's mobile.
After two rings it was answered by a bright voice. "Missy! How's Paris then? Any pretty French boys yet? Oooh, I'd kill for where you are! And you've got that Pierre French boy with you! He is such a cutie!"
Melissa raised an eyebrow. "Ronnie...are you drinking?"
"Sure am!" A fit of giggles from her end of the line and Melissa smiled warmly at her friend down the phone. "Your mum called." Melissa held her breath but shouldn't have even worried. "I told her you were helping my mum at the old folks home and I'd had to stay home-" she put on a voice as though her nose was blocked. "because I was sick and she didn't want me to make the fogeys sick." She dropped the voice. "Course I didn't use the word fogeys. I even complained about how it was totally mean of you to go with mum just because you felt it would be really rude if you didn't. You're such a sap."
"Veronica, you're awesome."
"I know. Anyway, I told her you'd give her a ring once you got back. Did I do good or did I do good?"
"You did good."
So her next call was to her mother. As the phone rang the nerves in her stomach twisted at the thought of lying but there was no other choice for it. When he mum answered she stuck to the simple. (Yes, she was having fun. Yes, she arrived safe. Yes, she would call again. Yes, she loved her and she'd see her soon.) She'd kept the call short, not wanting to talk for too long in case she was caught out.

Joanne's father didn't really understand the concept of a full on grounding, so her telephone privileges had not been revoked. She's received Melissa's 'calling now?' text and the only problem she was going to encounted was if Damien was on the phone to one of his girls, which (after sneaking past his door and pressing her ear to it) he wasn't. She nipped downstairs to find the cordless phone, and was closing the door to her room just as it started to ring. "Hello!" she answered, flopping down on her bed.

A sigh of relief from Melissa and she sat down on the bed behind her. "Oh, thank god," she told her. "It's so good to hear your voice."

"Paris is really cool...and I'm having a blast with Pierre, Stephanie, and Deirdre...and it's all...really good." She sighed, playing with the phone cord.

"Buuut?" Joanne prompted, knowing this was not all.

"I want her. She's in love with Renee and- do you know what it's like to ache for someone you can't have? I have her as a friend but...I want more."

Joanne smiled a bittersweet smile on the other end of the phone. Yes, she was starting to know that ache. "And Deirdre remains oblivious?" she asked.

Melissa shrugged, forgetting for a moment the other girl couldn't see that. "I don't know about oblivious. She's made it clear she loves Renee. She doesn't want to lose me but..." Another long sigh and she let herself flop back on the bed and stare at the ceiling. "I'm her best friend. But Renee's her girlfriend."
And also because there was another call she desperatly needed to make.
A few moments after hanging up on her mum she was dialing Joanne's number.
The first number she called was Veronica's mobile.
