Delilah sat out the front of the Chinese resturant near her aunt's house and awaited Pierre. She was a little early and was keeping herself busy was prawn crackers. And worrying.

She had trouble even admitting to herself why this meeting was going to take place. What had happened any other time guys had shown too much interest? She just cut them out. So why was Pierre any differant?

Del shoved another prawn cracker in her mouth and pouted.

Pierre had foregone the skateboard as his mode of transport in order to not get all hot and sweaty again after work, and had instead opted to take the bus down to Del's part of town. The downside of taking the bus, of course, was that it gave him way too much time to think about what might take place tonight. Had Del changed her mind? Or was she just saying goodbye? Or... well, who knew what Del was thinking now? All of this seemed to have gone so crazily wrong. Hopefully they'd be able to make things better tonight...

He got off at his usual stop and made his way down to the restaurant. Del was sitting out the front, looking as worried as he felt.

"Hey," he said, sitting down with her. "How are you, Del?"

Del gave him a smile and then started speaking right away. "Right," she said, looking at him seriously. "Here is how it has to work. You like me, right? And I like hanging out with you. But it's not going to ever be anything more than that. You have to be cool with that, because it's the way it's gotta be. You're a cool guy and you're good in bed and you dress nice which is a rarity in males. You've also got this whole long-haired mystery thing going on as well. I want us to be friends. You know, friends who shag and all, but I'm not gonna be your girlfriend." She paused and held out the paper bag to him. "Prawn cracker?"

Pierre's hand reached out to take a prawn cracker. He was on automatic pilot, of course. His brain had just more or less melted.

But what was the problem? This was a good thing, right? He had his friend back. That was what he had wanted. For her to stay. But I'm not gonna be your girlfriend. Of course not. How could it be so simple? Well, he wasn't going to give up, either. But was now the time to fight? Probably not...

"Okay..." Pierre nodded. "That's... good. I couldn't bear to lose your friendship on top of everything else." He realised he had a prawn cracker in his hand, and dropped it to the table. Then he got up, and moved across to hug her.

She smiled and hugged him too before pulling away. "Hey man," she joked as she disentangled herself from the hug. "Gotta give a girl some air." Why was this all going to go so so badly? Del could already see it. Why was she letting this go on?

"So," she said, grabbing another prawn cracker. "How's that job of yours going? I've still gotta get me one. Clare is riding me over it."

There was an uncomfortable feeling in Pierre's gut, and it was nothing to do with being hungry. Hell, for the first time in a long time, he didn't actually feel much like eating. There was just some sort of... fatalism in the way that Del changed the subject. Like even talking about themselves as friends was going to bring them closer to some kind of inevitable doom.

But fuck if he wasn't going to go along with it anyway. Bloody Hell, why did it have to be this way?

"The job is going very well," Pierre smiled. "Clive is a great boss. He's been very understanding about the other... commitments I've had over the last few weeks. Life's been pretty rough at Victoria Lane."

He was opening up to her, trying to share himself with her. Let himself be vulnerable. It just seemed like... the thing to do.

There. Safely slid right past the messy stuff. Whether he wanted to or not.

"How rough?" she asked, resting her chin on her hand.

"Rough enough that Peter has taken Deirdre to his place to look after her. And Jude... you remember Jude? We're all at our wits' end trying to get her to stop hurting hersel-" He stopped as the waitress came to take their orders. Pierre ordered himself a vegetarian dish, something not too dense. He really wasn't that hungry, but Del invited him out for dinner, so he'd damn well better eat something. He let her order as well, then continued.

"Jude's just not looking after herself," he sighed. "And there's only so much we can do. And of course, Tasha never stops shit-stirring."

Del ordered something for herself as well- sweet and sour pork- and then turned back to Pierre. She had only vague memories of Jude but she seemed to matter enough to Pierre. And if it mattered to Pierre. You care because he's your friend, that's all. It's nothing more than him being a friend. He's no differant to all those other guy friends you've boned.

Del couldn't even convince herself. "This Tasha seems like a wonderful peice of work." She rolled her eyes. "I always sort of thought Renee had good taste in people." After all, you're her best friend

"Well, we don't choose our families," Pierre sighed. "More's the pity. But... Renee is blind when it comes to Tasha. She loves her, and, well... there was a time when I hid from her a reason that she shouldn't. I lied to her. But it was for the best. It would have devastated Renee to find out what terrible things Tasha is capable of. I couldn't do that to her, not when she was about to leave the country."

Their food arrived, and all he could do was look at Del. "Maybe I did the wrong thing," he murmured... and he wasn't necessarily just talking about Renee and Tasha.

"It all sounds terribly dramatic," she said, picking up her chopsticks. "I'm sure you did the right thing." She shrugged and looked at him. "Not that I know the circumstances. You just seem like you usually do what's good for others." Oh, SHUT UP, Delilah! She shoved a peice of honey pork in her mouth.

"I try to," Pierre smiled. "Thank you. I'm very glad that you see that in me. I don't want to hurt anybody. Well... sometimes I want to run over Tasha with a lorry. But I never would!" He dug into his food himself. Couldn't make a poor show of it.
