Johan was practising his piano when Werner stumbled into the room, falling to the floor short of where Johan was sitting. Johan played a distinctly sour note, before jumping up and running to Werner's side. "Werner! What's happening, My Love?!"
Werner covered his face with his hands, fingers tangling in his hair as he curled up into a ball. "Can't...change..."
"What?" Johan's heart was pounding in his chest and he sounded utterly distressed. He rested his hand on Werner's side, and even there he could feel Werner's muscles contracting in spasms under his palm. "Are you trying to change?"
"I need to!" Werner groaned, his knuckles turning white as his fists gripped his hair. "I'm trying!"
This had never happened before. First Werner couldn't stop changing forms and he assumed his wolf form without warning. And now he couldn't assume it at all? It didn't make any sense! "Just breathe!"
"Auuugghhhh it hurts!" Werner shrieked, writhing around because the need to assume his wolf form was overpowering.
"Just calm down, Old Man!" Johan shouted, though there was no malice in it. "Maybe if you just calm down. Here! Take my hand!" Johan reached for the hands Werner was gripping his hair with, and he gradually pulled them away from Werner's face. Werner's expression was twisted with pain, and Johan felt as if his heart would break. "Just look at me!" Johan smiled weakly as Werner looked up at him. "That's right. I love you. You're going to be fine."
Johan's soothing words didn't lessen the pain. But they calmed something in Werner and, quite out of nowhere, there was a crack and Werner let out an animalistic howl. He dropped Johan's hands, and his body bowed up, twisting itself in inhuman ways. His face elongated, his limbs shortened, and fur sprang up all over his body. Johan fell backwards into a heap as Werner finally was able to shift.
When Werner fell silent, resting on the floor in a pile of fur and paws, the only sound in the room was Johan's heavy, frightened breathing. Something was wrong with his Werner. Something was very wrong. And god he just wanted to fix it. He looked over at the tired wolf who was so exhausted he was unable to move, and Johan dropped his head into his hands, letting out one loud sob.
Werner's ears pricked up at the mournful sounds of his lover's cry. His body was ragged and worn, but Werner had a loyal heart. And, as most canines would, he lifted his tired head, turning it towards the man he loved. Slowly, dragging his body across the floor with muscles that protested the movement the entire way, he made his way to Johan's side. And once there, his head dropped heavily into Johan's lap. He whined once and Johan uncovered his face to gaze down at Werner. Even sadness couldn't keep the fondness from his expression then, and he leaned down, burying his face in Werner's fur. "I love you, Mongrel." Johan whispered, and Werner gave one heavy thump of his tail in response.
Whatever was wrong, they would fix it. Together.
