It took a selfishly long time before Val could bring herself to reenter her son's hospital room. She'd stood at the end of the hall to watch his door in case Cai left him - she wouldn't have Danny left on his own - but the door remained closed and anything passing between the boys were theirs alone.
When she came back into the room the both of them were asleep and her lips almost found a smile but couldn't quite reach it. Instead she picked up one of the spare blankets and draped it around Cai, touching his hair lightly. A sweet boy, he was.
She didn't touch Danny. She didn't dare to wake him right now. Instead she went to the chair in the corner of the room and there she sat watching Danny sleep and coming to slow and painful decisions.
