Josie's house in the outer Circle of Regent's Park was the perfect place for covert night time activities. Her bedroom was the second floor - Miles made mocking references to his crazy housemate who lived in the attic - and from the windows she could look one way and see Regent's Park. She could swing herself onto the roof and stand tall and look over the other houses and see the corner of Victoria Lane, if not Stephie's house itself.

Since Jude had left town, Josie didn't have excessive amounts of purpose. Stephie had her job flying the helicopters and a few afternoons selling music, and she had that kid, which took up even more of her time. Miles was at university basically all the time figuring out what he needed to actually take over the world in an official and legal manner. Rosa was all set being Rosa all the time.

Josie didn't have an official job as a bodyguard any more. But she'd set herself up as an unofficial one. She did regular patrols of the park at night, wearing a long leather coat thick enough to repel tranquilliser darts. Cloaked also in her thick demon shadows, she flew over the city, watching for trouble.

She didn't have telekenisis like that metalhead demon Allanah and she didn't have freak visions like the little nerd Joel, but Josie spent most nights working on her shadows, and when it was dark, she could almost disappear. She could sense other demons and angels from a fair distance away. On foggy nights, she could fly close enough to the rooftops to get a real good reading on what kind of people were down below.

The trick was working out what address she was flying over, so she could plot it on her map.

She kept the map on her computer at home, heavily password protected in case Miles decided to be snoopy. Josie didn't think he would, but you could never tell with Germans and friends of Jude. Very suspicious people.

On the map she plotted every supernatural thing she came across on her patrols. They were demons and angels, mostly, because those were the easiest to feel. She could tell a vampire when she saw one, but she needed to be closer for that; hollow angels were the same. Angels she tried to avoid, like an alcoholic should avoid a bar. Should being the operative word.

Most of the people on the map Josie already knew. There were some new ones she tried to keep an eye on, in case they caused trouble. She hadn't discovered any unknown demons in the area yet, but there was an angel she didn't know, east of the park. Josie checked up on it every now and then, trying to work out a little more about it from its movements. Most nights it was in its house when Josie patrolled, which was hours after dark. This seemed safe enough, although even crazy people could keep regular hours.

Like Miles. Perfectly normal human being on the outside, ate healthy, slept healthy, had a big lock on his bedroom door. He was so careful to present himself as a normal Josie was sure he was totally nuts. She would have been really worried if he'd stopped drinking and snarking, but since he was still an arse with an amazing liquor selection, he kind of filled the Jude hole in Josie's life.

There hadn't been much trouble in London lately, but it was only a matter of time before Josie would be useful again, she was sure of it.
