When Joe knocked on Julian's door to let him know supper was ready, he didn't receive a reply. That wasn't abnormal, but as the silence continued, Joe let himself in to Julian's room. And his heart constricted.
Julian wasn't there. Neither was Julian's old guitar and some of his clothes were missing too. Joe made a sound of horror deep in his throat as he gazed towards the open window Julian had climbed through. It would have been a bit of an effort in his state. He must have been desperate to leave. And Joe couldn't understand why.
In a panic, Joe started to tear up everything in Julian's room in case it could give him a clue as to where Julian could possibly be. The sound drew Jordan's attention and she was just as horrified as Joe was. Immediately she went to call the police as Joe continued to tear through Julian's drawers.
Jordan came back, swearing under her breath. "They say he can't be reported until he's been missing 24 hours."
"Twenty four hours?! It's bloody December!! Fucking useless-" Joe shrieked, pulling out some rather odd looking empty bags and a metal plate resting near a lighter. Joe stared at it for a second and then he gave his wife a blank look.
"Oh, Jesus..." Jordan whispered. She knew what that meant. Joe wouldn't, really. He hadn't surrounded himself with the kind of people she had growing up. "Joseph..."
Joe pointed to the paraphernalia. "Is that what I think it is...?" And all Jordan could do was nod mutely with her hands over her mouth.
"Fuck!" Joe tore past her towards the door, grabbing his coat before he left the house. And as he ran for his car, he dialled his mother's number on his mobile. They all had to know.
