They'd taken her clothes away until she agreed to play nice with the younger girls, no more threatening to stab them with pencil leads while they were writing their little letters. She'd only been playing, but they took everything way too seriously here. So until she could wrap one of the junior nurses back round her little finger, she'd be sporting this stylish whist sack of a gown.

It had been a pretty bland kind of week, until the news reached her that there was a new girl, somewhere near her age, somewhere down the hall. Attempted suicide but in denial about it and something unspecific about Gods. Interesting. Josephine turned over ideas of the girl for a couple of days, biding her time and listening to what (the disgustingly smitten) Damien had to say about her, but after a week she was just too bored to stay in her room.

She wandered down the hall at three one afternoon, ignoring the children littering the place, till she found the new girl's door. Folding her bare arms under her breasts, she leaned against the doorframe and smiled. "Hello Renee."

Renee had been lost, gazing at the naked drawing of Deirdre that Jack had created. The girl was so beautiful... but she was jolted from her reverie by the voice of another at the door.

"Hello, Renee."

She blinked in surprise and turned to face the dark-haired girl. She was dressed in one of the white hospital gowns... strange. Was she new, or had she misbehaved?

"Hello," Renee replied, sitting up a little. "Have we met?"

"No," Josephine smiled. "But I've heard who you are. This place is a rumour mill, as you may well be aware. They say you're in denial, among other things." Josephine raised an eyebrow to ask, is that true?

"I'm in denial?" Renee scoffed. "I think not. Their minds are not broad enough to comprehend my motives." She met the other girl's gaze unflinchingly. "I don't suppose you will take my word for it, though."

"Sure I will. You seem saner than most of the losers they put in here." Josephine shrugged and moved into Renee's room, sitting down on the end of her bed.

Renee edged back a little, not entirely pleased with the way this girl had just wandered in here and made herself at home. Not that there was anything Renee could do about it. The rules made that pretty clear.

"So," she ventured, her fingers absently playing with the blanket, "may I ask why you are in here? I hope it's not too personal a question."

"Because their minds are not broad enough to comprehend my motive, as you so perfectly put it." Josephine smiled wryly at Renee and rolled her eyes in the direction of the door, and everyone else. "How are they treating you in here?"

"Better than they are treating you, I would venture," Renee said, eyeing the girl's hospital gown. She bit her lip for a moment as she considered her next move...

"Would you like to borrow some clothes? They might be the wrong size, but they will probably fit better than... that."

Josephine raised an eyebrow. "What, you don't think this suits me?" She grinned at Renee and struck a little pose.

"Perhaps something a little less... sack-shaped." Renee offered a small smile in return and rose to rummage through her large travel bag.

"I don't have much to offer... just tank tops and tracksuit pants, really." She looked up at the other girl. "I'm sorry, did you tell me your name?"

"Josephine." She said, slipping off the bed to crouch near Renee's bag. "And yes, anything is better than a sack." She looked up at Renee's face. "You're extraordinarily pretty, you know."

Renee lowered her lashes demurely and blushed a little at the compliment. Outside it wouldn't have provoked such a reaction, but in here without her make-up and pretty clothes, those words became even more precious and meaningful... especially from a stranger.

"You're quite the darling yourself, Josephine" Renee replied, taking the time to notice the girl's features from quite close up.

"Thank you," Josephine smiled graciously, then turned serious. "You have to be careful about being too pretty in here. Some of the nurses are a little too keep on the physical examinations, if you know what I mean."

Shut down NOW.

"I see," Renee murmured, all trace of her previous smile disappearing from her features. Wordlessly, she handed a few items of clothing to Josephine, and moved over to the other side of the room. She stood nervously in the corner, her arms folded across her abdomen.

Say something, Josephine. Change the subject. Just DON'T FUCKING ASK.

Josephine eyed her carefully, watching her squirm. She smiled a little too much. "You let me know if they try anything. I know how to get a man fired. Thanks, for these." She held up the handful of clothes, then pulled the white gown over her head to stand there in her underwear, completely unashamed. Once she'd slipped into Renee's clothes she sat back down on the bed, crosslegged, facing Renee. "I don't want anything bad to happen to you."

"Well, we'd none of us be in here if 'something bad' hadn't happened, would we?" Renee responded pointedly, remaining on her feet. At any other time, the sight of this girl almost naked would have excited her, but given the memories running through her mind right now, she was quite decidedly not in the mood.

Marcel... At the end of the day, he was no mage, just a common rapist. But he had still managed to destroy her life just as effectively as if he had used magick...
