The call came through to Jude’s cell phone just as she was getting out of the shower, and it was a towel-clad dash across her room to her bookshelf to answer it. And when she did the voice belonged to Fiona, but the panicked tone made it difficult to tell what she was saying. “Fiona, calm down. What’s going on?” There was a helpless cry and then the sound of someone else taking the phone.

“Jude?” It was Morgan’s infinitely calmer voice now.

“Yes, who else would it be,” she told her, trying to keep up. “What’s going on over there?”

“Jude, Fiona and I are at my dorm. I need you to get here as soon as you can. Do you understand?” Morgan was very good at being the non-nonsense voice of authority you wanted to answer. So when those words were said Jude decided not to question them. If Morgan wanted her there as soon as possible, Jude would be there.

“As soon as I can,” she confirmed and then hung up, immediately skimming down her address book for the taxi number. She pulled on her clothes as she called and then ran a comb through her wet hair once she hung up. She tried not to wonder too hard about what was going on but she had a few guesses. But all those guesses didn’t really leave Jude with much of a clue to why Morgan wanted her there so much.

It was twenty minutes later when she knocked on Morgan’s dorm room door and it was opened almost straight away and Jude was pulled inside, the door shutting quickly behind her. Fiona was sitting on the bed sobbing- a black eye already coming up clearly- with her baby Luke asleep on Morgan’s bed next to her. Jude looked from Fiona to Morgan in confusion. “What’s going on here?”

In an undertone Morgan said, “She went back to Brendan.” Jude looked at Fiona and wanted to shout at her. What were you thinking, you stupid stupid girl?? But where did Jude have the right to say anything? Certainly not here. Certainly not about this. “He’s threatened to take Luke away,” Morgan continued, picking up a bag and handing it to Jude. “This is all his stuff.”

A moment of confusion and then shock passed over Jude. “What? Why are you giving it to me?”

Morgan was very calm as she lifted Luke gently from the bed, stroking his head. “You need to take Luke for a few days until we can get some sort of court order and keep Fiona and Luke safe. Until then-”

Jude shook her head, staring at the baby. “No, no, can’t you just-”

“Brendan knows where I live,” Morgan told her, passing him into her arms gently. It was instinct more than anything that made her take him and hold him correctly. She didn’t mean it to seem like she was agreeing. “He knows this would be the first place Fiona would go- no, don’t interrupt. Brendan doesn’t know you. He’s never met you, never heard of you most likely, and has no idea where you live. You need to take Luke.”

Jude looked down in shock at the still sleeping bundle in her arms. “You’re kidding right? You can’t really expect me to look after a baby?

Morgan, sudden anger flashing in her eyes, pulled Jude to the side and lowered her voice. “If you don’t take this baby out of here right now Brendan will come. He will make Fiona very sorry that she walked out today and took him and he will take Luke away from his mother.”

Jude stood there, staring at her. A baby in her arms and a heavy bag on her shoulder. “Morgan-”

“Jude. Luke and Fiona are depending on you. I’m depending on you.” She moved to pull the door open and ushered Jude toward it. “You have to leave now. Brendan will show up here looking for them.”

“You can’t be serious-”

“You told me you used to baby-sit some aunt’s baby all the time. If you can do that you can look after Luke for a few days.”

“That’s not the same-”

Jude!

Jude closed her mouth and Morgan nodded. “Go. I’ll call you later tonight to see how you’re doing.”

As the door shut, Jude could only be thankful for the fact that she’d asked the taxi to wait for her. Right. Look after a baby...how hard could that be?

She sighed, knowing she wasn't even fooling herself with that talk. Jude dropped the bag into the backseat and mostly ignored the driver's mention of the 'cute baby' who slept the whole ride back to Victoria Lane.
