Malachy O'Reilly and Ardal Quinn had kissed on school property. Everyone had seen it. Everyone knew. Or that was what people were saying. The reality had been that only a few people had actually witnessed the kiss, which had indeed occurred. Then those few people, who Malachy had flipped the bird for their efforts, had gone and told everyone they knew, who had told everyone they knew, and the entire situation got blown out of proportion. In the end, people were saying that Malachy and Ardal had been rolling around on the ground, locked in the midst of passion. And that certainly had not been the case.

Once Malachy and Ardal had reconciled, they became inseperable. They spent every possible moment they could together, which wasn't so difficult to manage, considering Malachy's parents now couldn't stand the sight of him and Ardal's parents were frighteningly absent. They had a lot of time they were free to do whatever they wanted with. And so Malachy spent the rest of his summer break learning how to be this new person he had decided to become. And every new thing he discovered, Ardal was right there with him. There was something unspoken between them. Some sort of heat, that both of them saw, but each of them thought it was only himself who felt it. Neither of them had ever had feelings for a boy before. Everything was very new. And so they remained the closest of friends, both secretly wanting to be more.

Ardal Quinn had not seen Malachy O'Reilly in a very long time. Not since showing up at his doorstep on the morning after Whitehead had been rocked by bombing and violence to confront Mal about his part in it. Ardal couldn't be close to someone who could so willingly bring other people harm. He had stayed away, but he had to admit to himself, if not to anyone else, that it was not easy.

He missed Malachy. He missed his friend.

Things had started to wind down in Whitehead. The injured children had returned home, and they were just fine. The citizens of Whitehead were once again anti-police force, letting their support sway back to the PIRA. Francis O'Reilly and his band of thugs had laid low, but now that things were setting to rights and summer had begun, he wanted things to wind back up again.

Starting with his brother Malachy.

It was in every newspaper in Whitehead come morning. The town had been attacked by what the reporters called ‘a gang of anarchists’ who had significantly damaged the properties of several of the town’s law enforcement officers. The reports all went on to say that two children between the ages of 10 and 12 have been injured in one of the attacks, as they had been spending the night in their living room instead of sleeping in their bedrooms, in order to observe the moon for their science class project. The explosive devices had been thrown through the window, sending glass and debris everywhere. Both children were in hospital and while they would recover, their injuries were not insignificant.

Malachy hadn't seen Rage in about a week. She was avoiding school now that her father wasn't around to force her to go. And Mal sure as hell wasn't going to go out of his way to go over to her house. The scene of death. In fact, he'd been spending most of his free time with Ardal who kept harping on about exams, and instead of being annoyed, Mal thought it was funny. Ardal sort of reminded him of a mother, but...pretty. Or not pretty do much as...yeah, pretty. Even if he wouldn't ever admit it to anyone, even if they tortured him and pulled his toenails off.

Mal knew Rage had killed her father. And that very thought was more than enough to keep Mal away from her. Mal wasn't upset that the man was gone. He was glad that Rage would never again be hurt by someone who was supposed to love her. Glad that a foul person like him was gone from the earth. But, thanks to Ardal, Mal had to wonder if the very fact that you had been mistreated gave you the right to mistreat back. Weeks ago, he would have said yes. That was the very doctrine of the group he ran with, wasn't it? Mistreat back until you got a response for the injustice of decades? Push and push until something came of it?

Mal had thought nothing of it when Rage had shown up at his house the next day and claimed, "I'm with you." Sure, it seemed a rather obvious statement, but Rage had just had the shit kicked out of her by her arsehole of a father, and Mal didn't expect that she was going to say the world's most intelligent things. Either way, she most definitely was 'with him' and he was glad of that.

Rage returned from the doctor's office, cramping and miserable. The baby was gone. The child that had been hers and Mal's. She was glad because she was fourteen and he was fifteen and neither of them were in a place where they could have kids. But a part of her regretted having to do it. She felt like curling up in Malachy's bed and never moving again. And she planned to do just that but first she needed some things from home.
