Stephie was on her way back to the janitor's storeroom a couple of minutes before the end of the lunch break. She'd had lunch with Maureen, who turned out to be pretty friendly and funny once you convinsed her that you actaully wanted to hear what she had to say. Stephie was feeling quite proud of herself; she was discoving that she liked pulling people out of their shells.

It hadn't been such a bad day, today, although her brain wanted to brood on the subject of Jude. She wouldn't let it, Jude could damn well worry about herself, at least until she actually came to Stephie and told her what was going on. Till she had some kind of contact with the missing girl, Stephie refused to care. It was harder than it sounded.

"Hey, sweetheart." Someone called out from in front of her, and a couple of boys peeled themselves off the wall where they'd been leaning. The shorter one she recognised as the ring leader of the pack of fifteen year olds that'd been making hooting noices at her whenever she walked past. The taller one looked older, though, definitely a senior. "Hey, don't you dare just walk past us," he said as she tried to ignore them. She looked at them, completely unphased, and turned to walk back the other way but there were three more seniors behind her. Stephie folded her arms.

"You know what I like about being this height? It's perfect groin crunching height, and it's great for uppercutting ridiculously tall idiots."

"I don't like the mouth on you, jailbait."

"And I don't like that zit that's about to explode on your lip either." Stephie shot back. "So we're even and you can let me get back to work."

The taller guy stepped forward, looming over her. Stephie met his eyes, having to telt her head back somewhat to do so. "Alright then, back to work you go. It's good to find a chick who knows her place in the world."

She would have quite happily walked away before that. "Listen, you sexist jerk-" she was cut off as he shoved her up against the wall.

"No one talks to me like that, bitch- Arrh!" and he was cut off when she slammed her foot down on his toes. His grip tightened on both her forarms.

"That bruise'll make an interesting photo." Stephie commented, trying to keep her cool and hoping she wasn't failing too badly. He narrowed his eyes.

"What do you mean?"

"For evidence, you know." She smiled. He sneered at her.

"And you'd know all about that, wouldn't you?"

Stephie beamed. "Yup. So I'd suggest that you stay out of my way from now on, else the next part of you my foot'll meet will be your nuts and I'm sure there's plenty of little boys that'd be upset about that." She knew as soon as she'd said it that she'd gone too far, and had time enough to snap her head out of the way when his fist came rushing towards her face. She twisted out of his grip and tried to duck between a couple of the other boys who were fencing her in. By now the end of lunch bell had rung and most people were filtering back into the buildings- a handful or so, however, started to gather round, chanting the old high school mantra of "Fight! Fight! Fight!"

Stephie brushed herself off and smiled at the crowd. They'd done her a favour. At least, by making their demands, high school code of 'honour' dictated that they fight one on one, and Stephie could certainly take down one.

The lunch bell rang and Imogen stood up with a sigh to walk into her class, head head still in her book. She only stopped reading when she reached one of the inner halls and heard the chanting

"Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!"

She looked up up, her book forgotten, and weeved her way into the crowd. The fight was going on between some girl she didn't know and, ergh, Micheals. Of course it was him. He was the total loser type to pick on a girl. Imogen found she couldn't just leave but wished there was some way she could help the girl. The girl looked tough- with peircings and bright red hair- and Imogen found herself silently rooting for her to win. She betted she wasn't the only one there.

Time was, maybe a year ago, that Stephie would get so into a fight that she wouldn't notice a crowd no matter how loud they were. You'd stare your opponent down till there was nothing else in the world but the two of you and nothing but winning or loosing would change that. She'd changed her technique a bit, since then. Ignoring the crowd was one of the worst things you could do, you never knew if any among them would jump at you from behind. But you could use them, easily enough, get them on your side and distroy the moral of your opponent.

Or maybe it was just a rush, having people watch you. Stephie gave herself a moment, took her eyes off the boy to take in the crowd. The boy's friends were shouting insults at her and encouragement at him, but there were quite a few members of the crowd that looked like they'd seen this all before and were hoping for a different outcome this time. Stephie met the eye of a blond girl and winked at her, before smiling pleasently at the boy and slipping her earrings into her pocket. She's learned the truth about earrings and fights the hard way.

She winked at her! The gorgeously dangerous girl with the shock of bright hair winked at her and Imogen was on her side even more than she had been a few moments ago.

The crowd was getting rowdy and she shoved them back as good as they shoved her. Everyone wanted a good view. "It's about time you got your arse kicked, Micheals," Imogen spat in the direction of the boy. He took his glance off the redhead just for a second at the sound of her voice and glared at her. Nothing like the ex-girlfriend you despise rooting against you to get your ego frayed.

Stephie saw her opening and went for it, (she'd have to thank that girl later) throwing a punch at his face and trying to get round behind him- pin his arms behind his back or something before he could make a move. If she could end this fight before it started, with her sitting on top of him, it would be brilliant in so many ways. Her fist smacked into his face- knuckles painfully grazing against his teeth- but her was fast enough not to let her do any pinning.

Misty was walking out of another routine class when she noticed people wandering over and about to form a crowd. She walked over and got an early position in the beginning of the forming of the crowd so she was in innermost ring of the crowd.

She saw the girl she had met on the sidewalk ever so briefly and it looked like she had attracted the attention of a group of guys. A few of them looked to be decent size but after her childhood, none of them impressed her very much.

She saw that the girl was holding her own against the main guy so Misty split her focus to watch the other guys who she had guessed were the rest of this guy's gang. That is, if you wanted to give them enough credit to call them a gang rather than just a group of bullies, which Misty wasn't ready to grant them. She would watch and as long as it stayed 1 on 1, she would stay out of it. But if those other guys decided to join in, all bets were off and Misty didn't much like groups of male bullies picking on one single girl, even one as tough and capable as this girl seemed.

Seeing the punch land on his face gave her a warm glow inside. If only she had a camera on her to capture this moment. Tough as steel Micheals (or so he liked to tell her) getting himself broken but a girl half his size.

Stephie yelped in pain as he grabbed her hair and twisted it around his hand. Cheap trick, that- she smashed the palm of her hand up into his nose and jerked herself free, her scalp stinging, possibly bleeding a bit. Without missing a beat she hurled herself forwards at full throttle and rammed her shoulder into torso, pushing both of them to the ground. He landed on his back with a hard smack- jarred her neck too- but she was fast enough to spring back to her feet and shoved her foot down on his chest to hold him down. "Haha! How Batman was that?"

Why yes, this was all a game to her.

Misty watched the action with mild interest. This girl was doing pretty darn good. Misty had little doubt that most of the guys she used to spar with could have taken her eventually, but this girl was kicking ass against the guy she was facing.

She watched to see if this guy was any good. If he was good enough, the foot in his chest could be turned into an advantage for him. But somehow she doubted he was going to exploit it, so she kept an eye out to see if the other guys would try to get involved to save him.

Misty did smile at the comment, since it was kind of funny.

Stephie grinned down at him, expecting to see embarassment, or the anger born from it. He was winded, sure, and in a position no guy would want to be in, beaten or at least subdued by a girl a head shorter than he. But he wasn't playing along with the usual script; he was grinning right back and he looked like he meant it. "Fuck, girl, you're hot."

Stephie blinked at him, caught off gaurd, and didn't say anything. He put his hands against the ground and pushed himself up. Stephie dislodged her foot from his chest and let him, stepping back but still ready in case he jumped her again. "Way outta your league, boyo."

He smiled oh-so-charmingly. Regents probably had a class dedecated. "Not in my dreams," he said, slipping a hand into his pants. Stephie pulled a face, then stopped herself but he'd seen it already and smiled wider. "What are you going to do, hit me again? C'mon, get me down on the ground again baby, I love it." He was stepping towards her as he spoke, moving like a tiger.

If she hit him again, he'd just do more of the same; if she walked away, he would have won. They both knew it, and the crowd was doing a fair amount of breath holding too. Stephie glared at him, and did what she always did when confronted with a situation she didn't know how to resolve; she went straight for the groin.

Now she really had one over him. He was still standing- she gave him credit for that, there's some wouldn't- but he looked shakey. His lips were thin with pain and he looked at her with a look of pure hate. Well, that went well.

She sildled over to him, put her face close to his and told him. "Don't you dare, ever, speak to me again."

Misty let out a songlike laugh as she walked up to the 2 girls.

As she neared the girl who had just kicked the guy's butt, she spoke to her. "That was pretty cool. Good to see creeps like that get their butts kicked. It is a treat to watch, and is a good reminder that while a good portion of guys are dangerous to fight and know what they are doing, some are just blowhards who rely on the illusion of being capable and really are lightweights."

Misty smiled at the new blonde girl drawing on the fun she had just had watching. "So, you know the poor bastard who probably will be singing slightly differently for the next little while ?" Misty asked in as an unthreatening or unjudgemental manner as she could, since she was simply curious.

This was kinda cool; she didn't usually pick up fans after fights, just bruises and enemies. Stephie grinned at the two girls and kept moving, talking to them while she walked. "Actually, more guys that not don't know how to fight, in my experiece, they just go for the full-on-limbs-flailing-talk-them-down method Micheals there used." She jabbed a thumb back in the direction of the evaporating crowd. "But don't either you follow my example, I'm gonna get in a whole heap of shit for this and neither of you look like the kind of girl who needs them on your back, no 'fence intended."

Imogen looked at the redhead who still looked pretty cool and collected, and followed her as she walked. "No offence taken. And I'm not planning on getting into any scrapes. I don't think I'd hold up very well in them." she pointed to her forearm. "See? Floppy as a wet noodle." a little friendly grin traced her lips. "I'm Imogen." She didn't know if either of these girls were the handshaking type- the redhead didn't look it- so Imogen didn't offer hers.

"Oooh, skate? As in skateboarding? That's kinda cool." And it fit the image that was steadily growing in Imogen's head of Stephie. Tough, dyed hair, peirced, skateboarder. Imogen liked it and wished she could be as daring. She wished she could dye her hair bright green and take up bungee jumping! But Imogen didn't really have anything more daring than pierced ears, even if the people in this school seemed to think she was an outcast. (Was it so wrong to think outside the box? Jesus!) "I once had a pair of rollerblades when I was eight and...um..." she trailed off and screwed up her face in embarrassment at what she was even saying

Misty called out to the blonde girl, as she started to leave "Hey Imogen, it was nice to meet you too. Maybe we will see each other around. Feel free to come talk to me if you do."

Misty then turned and smiled at Stephie, finally finding a point to inject herself without cutting someone off or interrupting.

"Please don't take this the wrong way but I am glad you have been fortunate enough to have most of the guys you know be clueless in terms of how to fight." Misty shrugged somewhat sadly. "To be honest, the reverse is true in my case. I have had both the pleasure and the painful experience of knowing more guys who were quite good than ones who were like that jerk. Luckily, some of them were kind enough to help teach me and let me train with them over the years. Even if their method of training sometimes accounted for some of the painful part." Misty paused and then let out an unplanned little giggle. "I think I should count myself extremely lucky they did since I seem to attract a lot of attention and not all of it positive. Of course, some of it probably has something to do with the fact that I am not always exactly miss congenality. I believe the word bitch has come up a few times. Though, while it is much more fun to blame it on my personality, honesty compels me to admit my supposed attractiveness is more often the initial cause. I think my life would have been more painful if they hadn't helped teach me." Misty looked over at Stephie and gave her a genuine and thankful smile as she added quickly "Thank you for your concern, though. You are right that the school being on my back would be a negative thing, though I wouldn't let that stop me if I feel the need or that it is the right thing to get involved."

Misty shook her head and quickly tried to move on. "I don't suppose it is as simple for you as looking at the bruises as a badge of pride ? It sounds like you have been bruised enough to know most of the secrets to dealing with them. But if you want any help, I have some stuff in my locker over there to help with it. I tend to make sure I have basic supplies in case I am the one getting bruised or cut or whatever. And I am a lot less likely to be reporting it to school officials than most school nurses. I even have some stuff you could rub onto that sore muscle in your arm I saw you flinch about just a few seconds ago. It is not a miracle cure but it does seem to help." Misty said with a chuckle as she remembered the number of sore muscles she had created over the years.

Misty paused and then smiled at her again. "I will understand if you want to decline, though. Since we hardly know each other, I could see an argument to be made that caution would usually be the wiser course. So it is up to you."

Misty then galnced over. "You are right, it is unlikely that you won the war right then. But you did win a battle and sometimes that is the most we can hope for. The crowd probably saved you from getting ganged up on. but it also limited what you could do to him without getting into a massive amount of trouble. So, all things considered, I would count it as a victory. He probably will be back but that is for another day. You already know to watch your back and he will have to be more careful next time."

Misty then shot her a devilish look. "Besides, you won more than a few bruises. Imogen seems like a sweet girl and it wouldn't surprise me if you saw her again. So you have won a decent start in making a new friend in her, if you want. Which is great in itself."
