Oh Jesus, so he could choose to stick around, or kill his mother. And sure, he wouldn't be alive to feel any guilt, but he still wasn't sure what happened after people died because if Thomas' dead wife was hearing him, then would he somehow be aware his mother had died? There was no way he could do that. Absolutely no way.
