Zoe nodded slowly, raising her eyes to look briefly at Cai. He was fighting his disappointment over Nessie, waiting for her to explain the rest. He'd seen some of the rest, he'd seen a man in one of the cages with the largest, most impressive black wings he could imagine. And she'd told him a little, then, but it felt like hearing it again, with more people around, would make it...
Make it what? Realer? But it was already real, because he'd seen it. Make it make more sense? But he already understood, at least a little.
Cai just wanted to hear her say it again, like you wanted to hear your favourite book read over and over when you were a kid. Except his childhood books hadn't been this scary. Hadn't make the hair on his arms stand on end.
Zoe held her hand out, palm facing her. She touched her thumb. "Werewolves," she said, and moved onto her pointer finger. "Seers." Middle finger: "Vampires." Ring finger: "Ghosts." Pinky finger: "The worst ones, no, not worst, the most powerful ones, are demons, and angels. People born different, stronger, and sometimes messed up. They have wings, when they choose; they can turn into people with wings like werewolves can turn into wolves."
Rachel stared at her, one of her arms wrapped around Danny's shin. "There are ghosts?" she asked. "Ghosts are real?" Zoe nodded, like she was apologising for the existence of ghosts. Rachel shook her head, then pressed it into Danny's knee.
