It wasn't freezing yet, but as October faded on towards November, the nights got cooler. Flynn wasn't homeless any more, and he wanted a heater that worked, dammit. He wanted some kind of warmth to melt his frigid existence. So Flynn did something he honestly had never realised actually happened before. He called his landlord to have them come fix it.
The idea that someone else was responsible was new to Flynn. He couldn't fix the heater but he wasn't completely on his own. He had someone to ask, even if he didn't like the landlord. The man smelled of cheese crisps and beer. He had a gigantic beer belly which made him look like he had just eaten someone of Flynn's size for lunch and they were curled up in his abdomen. The man still came and tinkered around with the heater while Flynn perched nervously on a chair.
After about two hours, many swear words, and a few new parts, the landlord stood up and hiked his trousers back up. "She'll be righ' now."
Flynn nodded and then he stood, hovering several feet away from the landlord like a frightened, flightless bird. "Okay. Thanks. Uhm...so it'll be warmer now?"
"She will. I'll add the money for parts on to the rent due Friday."
Flynn's heart nearly stopped and for a moment, he couldn't speak. Finally, he managed to find some words, but they were no more articulate than, "money...Friday?"
"You're lookin' at near 100 quid for all that," the landlord said, pulling his trousers up again. She had a broken-"
"A hundred-!" Flynn forced himself to calm down. He couldn't panic outwardly in front of the man he owed money to, could he? "That's...I didn't know it would be so expensive."
"Havin' a bit of a rough go are we?"
"Erm...something like that." Flynn bit his lip. "I'll find a job, it's just taking a while-"
"Well you just do your best," the man said and then he smiled and the expression made Flynn feel sick to his stomach. "And if you can't pay we'll come to some kind of arrangement." At that, the man pulled at his crotch and then he ambled away, leaving Flynn feeling numb and colder than when he had had a non-working heater and one hundred more pounds to his name.
