"The customer by the window would like to see you, when you are ready. She would prefer a woman's opinion."

Justine looked up from the blouse she was putting back onto a coat hanger, and nodded her head once. "I'll be right over," she said.

August looked at her in moderate surprise. "That's it? No telling me to let you do your own job?" One of the only upsides of this job, thus far, had been causing the blonde, who'd been hired at the same time as him, to squirm.

Justine looked at August for the first time since he had spoken to her. "Here at Quail, we don't tell our fellow shop assistants off. Maybe it's something you should consider." She handed him the blouse, now back on its coat hanger, for him to hang up on the shelf, then skirted around the desk to meet with her customer.

She spoke with two other walk-ins, and convinced one of them to buy a stunning new outfit for her interview, before having to even look at August again.

When she did, she braced herself against almost anything he could say. She simply made the decision not to reply, whatever he said.

August fell into stride with her as she went out the back, hanging in the doorway by the curtain since one of them needed to be in view of the front door at all times. "You're acting more sane today."

Justine looked at the black blouses with the frill colars, pulling them out gingerly and making sure that there were in fact no more size 14s, as seemed to be so from the shelves.

"Would you be able to check the shelves once more and let me know what sizes are there in this blouse?" she asked, holding it up.

With a measured breath, August finally said, "Sure," and walked over to the front of the store.

Turning back to her stock, Justine gave a little smile.

As she finished for the day, she walked past August's cloud of smoke just outside of Quail. She didn't mind smoking, it wasn't for her cause she just didn't like the taste, but she'd grown up around it. It wasn't August smoking that annoyed her. It was the fact that he thought fifteen minutes from closing up meant a fifteen minute smoke break before leaving for the day.

At 4.59, with her bag on one shoulder, and her hair over the other shoulder, she said to him simply, "I've left the counting of today's takings for you to do. I'll see you tomorrow."

"What?" August walked up behind her, following her until she stopped walking and looked back at the shop.

"You do know that the door's wide open and anyone could walk in and take the cash from the till, don't you?" Justine said, looking at him.

"Why do you think you should do less work than me?" August asked.

Justine's eyes turned innocent. "I don't. I figure, if you stay till around quarter past five, we'll have worked the same hours today. You really should go back to the store and lock up." She turned around without waiting for him to reply, and continued walking in the direction of home again.

August narrowed his eyes at her back, then grudgingly, headed back to Quail.
