Kait felt her arms as numb and almost disconnected from the rest of her body as Renee found solace in them. Almost up till this point, she'd been quietly telling herself that it wasn't real, that he would still somehow come back to life, that he was immortal, despite all the evidence piling up on the contrary.
But she couldn't do that anymore. They were standing here at his funeral, Peter's funeral, and any thoughts other than respect for the man now dead, and mourning, seemed out of the question. Her arms tightened around Renee, wanting and needing to offer support. It felt like penance for her former disbelief.
