When the text to say that Renee was awake came to her, Scarlett was asleep in Marco's van. He was long gone with James but had left her the keys telling her to get some sleep if she needed.
She was dreaming she was with the other girl though. She was brushing hair back off her face and whispering loving words into her ear. And when she woke she almost forgot that anything had been bad. But that bliss didn't last long and worry once again filled her. How long had she slept? Scarlett fumbled for her phone to check the time and saw the message instead. Renee was awake.
Scarlett was in the hospital and pushing Renee's door open in less than five minutes, her breath coming ragged from running. "Renee!" She was lying there, still looking unwell, but awake. "Oh, my dear sweet beautiful Renee!" She moved toward the bed and fell into the chair she'd been in earlier, taking Renee's hand and kissing it.

Renee smiled warmly as Scarlett burst into the room. The other girl's loving lips on her hand melted her heart as always.
"Hey," she said softly, earlier conversations having left her voice a little weak. "I've been waiting for you, dear." She yawned, and tried to wriggle closer to Scarlett, despite the narrowness of the hospital bed. "'sokay, though. I've had company. I missed you, sweetheart."

"I've missed you too. I'm sorry I wasn't here when you woke," she said with a pang of guilt. "I shouldn't have left. I should have stayed sleeping here with you. I don't know what made me think I should leave." She was feeling hopelessly apologetic. She kissed Renee's forehead.

Renee lifted a hand to stroke Scarlett's arm as the redhead leaned over her. "Doesn' matter... you're here now," she smiled. She made a sound that might have been a giggle, but it didn't come out quite right. "I like sleeping with you. Like that time at your place... Mmmm. Feels like a long time ago..."

Renee smiled and squeezed Scarlett's hand. While her grip wasn't as firm as it might have been, it was still stronger than she looked. "I love you too, Scar. You... are one of the most wonderful things life has ever given me. I... I'm sorry to have put you through all of this. Please, believe me when I say that I never meant for any of this to happen. Not like this."
