Trying to kill himself hadn't worked. Running away from home hadn't worked. Trying to refuse Ray the landlord hadn't worked. Flynn's attempt at a normal life had crumbled and there was nothing left. He had tried his hardest to make a life and to have a job and to live on his own, but the truth was obvious. He couldn't. And he couldn't die either.

He would get on with it.

Flynn never said a word to Susan about what she had walked in on, and she had quickly dropped the subject after telling him she was glad he was okay. He wasn't. And after that, he barely said more than two words to her at all. He barely said more than two words to anyone. He visited her in her apartment and they sat in silence.

That was how Flynn lived now. In silence. He had no music left.

And, as if to show how resigned he was to his new place in life, he started showing up at Ray's apartment every two days like clockwork, ready to pay for his rent in the way Ray saw fit. He didn't feel regret or revulsion. He felt nothing.

And when he was alone, he sat and stared out the window and said nothing and felt nothing, because if he allowed himself to feel, he would break and shatter and he didn't know what he would end up with at the end of it all.
