Renee had just clicked 'update journal' when she heard Deirdre's knock on the door. She wiped the dampness from her face with her hand - the tears had still been falling as she tried to distract herself on the Internet.
She padded down the stairs in her customary panties and tank top, the thought not even occurring to put more clothes on. She was too out of it, too miserable. Ever since she had come home from school to find Scarlett's post on her LiveJournal...
Renee opened the front door, and before even speaking, she had enveloped Deirdre in a hug. It was a rather languid embrace, so different from the gleeful or desperate squeezing those close to her might have come to expect of late. She was just so drained of energy that it was all she could really do to just drape herself over Deirdre.
"Hi," she murmured into Deirdre's hair.
"H...Hi. You're. You're naked! I am not complaining. What's wrong, Renee?"
Renee sighed and wrapped her hand easily around Deirdre's, leading her over to the couch. No other members of Renee's family seemed to be around. Her mother was probably networking, and her father would still be at work. Who knew where Lizzie was.
"I suppose it would not be right to show you, but... Scarlett posted in her journal. She said that..."
The tears were falling again. She was going to choke on the words if she didn't get them out now.
"...she doesn't want to be with me or Kait."
Now that it had been said, the deluge returned. She sat down heavily and hid her face in her hands, doing little to muffle her sobbing.
Deirdre didn't exactly know how to respond to that. In HER opinion it was the best damn news ever! not that she didn't adore Scarlett. She did. But Renee would never look twice at Deirdre again if Scarlett was in the picture. And of course, now Renee was hurt. Again. When would people stop hurting her girl?
"I'm so sorry, Renee." Deirdre sat next to to the couch and pulled Renee's sobbing form against hers. "Maybe she's just confused. She doesn't know what she wants yet." Deirdre shrugged helplessly as she ran her fingers through Renee's hair.
Renee wrapped her arms around Deirdre and lay her head against her chest. She doesn't know what she wants yet. She was just trying to be comforting. It wasn't Deirdre's fault that what she said simply wasn't true.
"No..." Renee sighed, choking on her tears. "I think, for the first time, she does know. It is not I, nor Kait."
To sit in their current position was quite awkward, and it was more or less on autopilot that Renee shifted to lie down with her head in Deirdre's lap. She liked Deirdre's fingers stroking her hair. Didn't ever want it to stop.
"I don't want Scarlett to be unhappy." The very thought of it started her crying again.
Deirdre stroked Renee's hair, and placed her other hand on the girl's back. "She'll always be there. She won't be unhappy. And I very much believe that she wouldn't want you to be unhappy either, Renee. I think she'd be upset if she saw how much you were hurting. I...I am."
"I- I know." Renee turned in Deirdre's lap so that she was lying on her back, facing Deirdre above her. "It just means that... the fantasy world I built around them is finally over."
She toyed with a lock of Deirdre's hair, twirling it between her fingers. "I cracked Scarlett's picture. I need to buy a new frame," she murmured absently.
"Wow. Well. We could go buy a frame if you wanted. Or we could stay here." Deirdre sighed. "I am so profound. I really am sorry, Renee. I wish things were different. A LOT of things, in fact."
"I've not the energy to go out," Renee sighed. "I just want to stay here with you."
A LOT of things, in fact. She had a fair inkling of what Deirdre was talking about. She just didn't want to admit it. Not yet. Things were complicated enough with Scarlett, Kait... Delilah... It seemed inevitable that things would... develop between them. Whether that proved on some help to Renee, or simply complicated things further... Goddess, she didn't know if she even really cared any more. She just wanted to feel pretty.
"I suppose we could watch movies. And eat ice cream. That is what is appropriate in this situation, oui? Movies and ice cream? Terrible girly movies. Well, I do not have any of those, but I have many very sentimental French movies..."
Deirdre shrugged. Being around Renee as she pined after some other girl was agony. What difference did it make WHAT they did. "Ice cream and French movies. Check."
Renee reached up and wrapped her arms around Deirdre. "Thank you, sweetheart."
