Uncle (Danny, Greg, Rachel, Cai, Zoe, Dylan, Deirdre)

It was Danny's first time out since he'd been at Priory and before then he wasn't exactly hitting the town every night. The trip to Robert MacGavillary Memorial Hospital felt strange and by the time they arrived, Danny was just glad to be inside again.

Having arrived early, Danny sat in the waiting room, willing his friends to show up soon. He couldn't get his mind off what he was about to do. He hadn't told any of his friends his plan because he knew they would stop him. It involved getting closer to Greg than he ever hoped to be again, and just the thought of it was weighing on him. He hoped it would work out and he could get the information he needed. Without it, this was all going to be for nothing.

Rachel heard herself say "Danny no," out loud and she pressed the hand that Dylan wasn't squeezing up against the mirror. "No, that's too far," her heart felt like it was throbbing in her throat, making it hard to talk. No she wouldn't watch Danny kiss him. She wouldn't let him. He was clever and brave and unbelievably sneaky, but she wouldn't let him go that far. "DANNY!" her voice cracked out of her throat, as she banged her hand flat on the mirror. "NO!"

Rachel was bolting for the door even before Deirdre moved, scrambled at the doorhandle for a frantic moment before she slipped through, the first one into the room. This was when her cast would have been useful - she could have slammed it down on Greg's hand to make him let her Danny go. Instead all she had were two arms, one significantly weaker than the other - but her nails were long. Bright orange and long. She'd torn her own wrist open with her nails, she could damn well tear open Greg's. "LET HIM GO!" she screamed, grabbed Greg's wrist and dug her nails in as hard as she could.

Rachel jumped back from Greg the second he let Danny go, and grabbed onto Danny instead, wrapping her arms around his stomach. She didn't try to stop him pulling his hair, she didn't think could, but she could hug him.

Zoe burst into the room a moment later, planting herself between Greg and Danny. Her whole body felt too tense, being in the same room as him. She was glad he was crying.

Cai followed, though he didn't have a clue what help he would be he only knew he couldn't stay on the other side of the room, just watching. He had to be where his brother was.

Rachel pressed her fists against her mouth as she watched, her eyes wide and her spirits high. "Yes!" she exclaimed, as Danny yelled at Greg. When Danny snapped Greg's finger, she whooped in delight. No - delight wasn't quite right because delight didn't work with this pent up fear and this horror -

Victorious. She felt fucking victorious, even though it was all Danny. She wanted to kiss him so much right now. She grinned at Zoe, who looked back at her for a moment like she was utterly insane.

But then Zoe grinned too, though her grin was tighter and meaner. She drew her own hand back and, first clenched, hit Greg as hard as she could in his face, right where he'd punched her.

"Yeah, stop it!" Rachel stepped forward as Danny backed up, and Zoe let her because she looked like she needed to vent. There were enough people who had fucked up Rachel's life that she never got a chance to yell at, she could damn well take it all out on this one. "You'll never find him! You're never going to touch him again! You're never going to touch anyone! We've won! Danny's so much smarter than you and so we've already won!"

Okay Cai, Cai thought to himself. Stay grounded. Stay calm. Stay in your own head. Everyone was flipping but he couldn't let himself. He had to keep his feet on the ground, he had to keep breathing in, breathing out. He had to keep Danny calm, and do all he could not to fall into a vision because right now that would probably destroy him, and almost definitely destroy Danny. Hey Jesus? he asked silently. You got my back, yeah?

Yeah, thought Cai to himself. Yeah. "Okay Danny, I'm here," he said, carefully taking Danny's shoulders in his (gloved) hands. "You wanna get out of here? We can go, any time."

"Hey Zoe," Rachel said, "Wanna punch him again?"

Zoe's hand really hurt. "Fuck yeah," she said, and punched him again.

Zoe had hit him so hard that her hand screamed in pain, and she wanted so much to shake it out but refused to show any sign of weakness. She couldn't hit him again, though - her fingers refused to close back into a fist. Do you still dream of me he said, and she felt twisted and sick. "No," she said, but she heard how defiant she sounded, how untrue it sounded. She hadn't dreamed - but she had relived it, only last night.

"I could punch him," Rachel said, fidgeting from one foot to the other. "If he says another word, I can punch him."

"Do it, Rachel!" Zoe encouraged. "It feels great." It felt as much of a rush as beating up a huge man in a giant haunted house. She guessed her perspectives were a little skewed, but now wasn't the time for self-analysis. Now was the time for violence.

Maybe if they hit him hard enough he'd lose all power of speech, he'd never make it to court. It was a brutal thought, but the way Greg was talking, Zoe felt she needed to be brutal.

Rachel hit him, even though Danny said she didn't have to. She hit him because she wanted to, because she and Zoe were spurring each other on, because nothing could touch them. Because no one was allowed to talk about Danny like that.

Rachel hooked her arm around his back and pulled him closer, closing her eyes as he kissed her forehead. Her arm stayed around Danny as he yelled at Greg, as Danny proved over and over how amazing he was, and she swelled with love for him. He was going to spend his life with her, and for the first time ever, she could really believe it. They had a future. They did.

Rachel wanted to add something onto Danny's perfect speech, just to show Greg he couldn't get to them, he wouldn't ever get to them. But she wasn't erudite in the same way Danny was, and she hadn't spent the week planning this moment the same way Danny had, so when Danny finished speaking, Rachel followed it up with: "So nyaah."

Zoe laughed. She felt mean, and no longer powerless because Danny was no longer powerless. Greg didn't own him and Greg would never. They were all stronger than this evil.

As proud as he was of Danny, Cai really hoped they could all get out of here soon. He didn't like seeing this side of Rachel and Zoe, this side that was so eager to hurt someone even though there was no way Cai was siding with Greg. He deserved bad things. Just... Cai didn't like that the girls were the ones imparting his punishment.

Rachel dropped down to her knees in front of him, her hands on his legs. "No no," she said. "No not now, Danny, you have to be alright."

"DOCTOR ABBY!" Cai yelled, hovering near Danny's chair. "OR ANY DOCTOR..."

"Danny?" Rachel put a hand over his, the hand clutching his shirt. "Danny you kicked his arse, you won, you're not allowed to die..."

[identity profile] itsajesusthing.insanejournal.com 2014-10-18 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Zoe stepped back as Abby took over, and sat down in a chair a little distance away. She wanted to hold onto the feeling of victory for as long as she could but with Danny falling apart in front of her it it felt hollow.

Cai sat down next to her. "Are you - how's your hand?" he remembered not to ask her if she was okay.

Movement was starting to come back to Zoe's hand. It hurt, but it wasn't broken. "Was just having a conversation last night about punching people in the face," she said.

Cai wasn't sure what to say to that, so he turned to watch Danny. He looked very young. Abby had him, though. Cai wasn't sure he could have steadied himself enough to be that helpful to Danny. He would have tried, if Cai had needed him, but he was glad he didn't.

"That wasn't what I expected," Cai said. Zoe was gently massaging her knuckles with the fingers of her other hand. Cai wished he felt confident enough to take off his gloves and help heal her hands.

"What did you expect?"

"I do not know," Cai said. He felt very, very tired and just wanted to lean against her shoulder and close his eyes, but he was also very very worried about Danny and felt if he didn't keep his eyes on Danny then terrible things would continue to happen. "He was so... cruel."

"Cruel," Zoe said, looking at him with a lot of leftover anger in her eyes. "Yeah, what a meanie. I think the word you want is fucking evil, Cai."

Maybe it was, but Cai didn't say it. He tucked his hands under his arms and sat forward in his chair, elbows pressing into his knees, and waited for Danny's panic attack to pass, hoping like anything that Abby was right, that he wasn't dying. Hoping like anything that once he'd cried all the tears out, he'd be okay again.

Cai knew he should have stopped thinking in terms of okay a long time ago, but he couldn't help it.

Everything had to turn out okay, he still believed that. Pain could not last forever.
