Friendsies! (Deirdre, Patrick, demon!twins)
Time was, Deirdre hated it when Peter didn't include her in a raid against the Templar or a rescue mission. And then her girlfriend had gone on one and ended up dead. If Peter asked, Deirdre would go and help in a heartbeat, because she owed him. But now Peter didn't ask, and Deirdre was secretly glad. She had twins to think about, and they had already lost their other mother, before they had even been born. All they needed was to lose their biological mother. Then they would be left with Giles and god knew that was a train wreck waiting to happen.
When Deirdre was asked to complete the much more tame task of watching over Patrick Finnegan during his first night in his new house, Deirdre immediately agreed. She liked Patrick and his quirky sense of humour. And he was from Dublin like she was, and he reminded her of home.
She arrived at his doorstep which was answered by Thomas. "Hey!" Deirdre said loudly. She said most everything loudly. "I was expecting a short red-head!"
"You got me instead," Thomas said with a smile. "I'll just trade with you here. My kids are with Mums and she's probably bought them dozens of new toys by now. Patrick's in the kitchen. See you later, Patty!"
Deirdre kissed Thomas on his way past her and then she pushed the stroller up into Patrick's house. "Patrick, your demon has arrived!" she called out.
Patrick stepped warily into the entryway once Deirdre had shut the door behind her. He gave her a hesitant wave but the moment he caught sight of the twins in their stroller, it was like someone switched on a light behind his face. His entire being brightened. "You brought your twins!"
"Peter said I could," Deirdre explained. "I didn't want to leave them with their father. Not that he would have minded, but I am still punishing him for being an arse. So no extra time with the twins until I don't hate his face any more."
"Well-" Patrick said, looking awkward. "Heh. Can I hold one?"
Deirdre smiled and she nodded. Gabriel was staring up at Patrick with interest while Eiley was getting fussy. "Try the brunette. That's Gabriel and he loves new people." Deirdre swept Eiley into her arms. "This little girl is shy. Her name is Eiley, and she'll warm up eventually."
Patrick leaned down and he lifted Gabriel into his arms. "Hello, little guy!" Patrick said excitedly. "Look how cute your nose is!"
"Thank you!" Deirdre said with a grin. "He has my nose."
Patrick laughed and he carried Gabriel into his new living room with Deirdre following behind. "Can you say Patty?" Patrick chattered to the tiny boy. "Patty! Say Patty!"
"Fuh-Atteee!" Gabriel yelled proudly.
"Yes, that's me!" Patrick said with a laugh.
Deirdre giggled and she sat down, setting Eiley in her lap. "So I'm guessing you don't mind that I brought the twins over?"
"Not even a little," Patrick said happily. It seemed he had completely forgotten that he had been terrified not moments ago. "I love kids. I...I miss kids. I used to have two. Daughters."
Deirdre knew part of Patrick's story because she spent a lot of time at the hospital and people talked. Not official people, of course, but Nicholas seemed to think everything was everyone else's business. And she wasn't even a little interested in how he knew. "I heard. People at the hospital talk. Well, Nicholas talks. I'm sorry."
"I heard about your girlfriend too. Talking goes both ways. I'm sorry too. I understand what it's like to lose a partner suddenly."
A silence passed between them as they both looked at each other with absolute understanding in their eyes. Deirdre smiled shyly at him and then she looked away, and it was, perhaps, the truest glimpse she had ever given someone of her actual self so soon after meeting them. Deirdre hid how shy she was under layers of bravado and her loud voice. She could just feel that Patrick understood, and she felt regret that she hadn't gotten to know him until now.
"Well," she said, breaking the companionable silence. "I'm here to protect you, so you should probably show me around the rest of the house. And then I brought some awesome food to make. I am an excellent cook, you should count yourself lucky. And hey, we could watch some Father Ted! I have it on my laptop!"
Patrick grinned widely and he kissed Gabriel's nose. "It sounds like a very good plan to me. Thank you, Deirdre."
"Hey, no worries. Just doing my demonly duty. You do of course realise this means you have to play your piano for me!"
"Only if you sing while I do it," Patrick countered. Deirdre didn't know it, but Patrick was actually a huge Spectre fan, and he adored Deirdre's vocals.
"Ooh, deal! I am amazing!"
Patrick chuckled and he stood, scooping Gabriel into his arms to give Deirdre a tour of his new house, no longer terrified that his first night of his new life would end in tragedy.
