Danny watched Cai until the other boy said he was sorry. His eyes fell closed in an attempt to stave off any tears that might try to work themselves down his cheeks.
He heard someone walk in and his eyes snapped open. "Zoe," he said, his voice sounding an awful lot like a drowning man taking his first breath of air after breaching the surface. He sniffed a little, having narrowly avoided crying.
"The cops interviewed me again this morning," he said, since Zoe had had to hear his particular views on the cops making him re-live his experiences over and over again. "And I think tomorrow I have to talk to a lawyer, and I know I have to tell it all to my therapist. They keep taking notes and it seems so vulgar, you know?" Zoe was in the room now, and her presence absolutely changed his demeanor. She was there and he felt safe to just talk.
