"He called you?" Cai said in surprise, not sure how he felt about that. "Huh," he said. Hurt, he felt hurt. He shouldn't, because he told himself he'd accepted the fact that he and his father simply did not fit in each others lives, but it still hurt. "What about you, Zoe, your parents alright?"

"My adopted ones are," Zoe said, without further explanation.

"Good," Cai said firmly. "I live with my grandparents, my mum's parents, since she passed away."

Zoe winced - why did everyone's parents have to be shitty or dead? "Sorry," she said.
