Giving Up (Gavin, Dragonetti)

Gavin had awoken in the Templar infirmary several days previous, and since then he had simply rested limply on the mattress. There was no sign of defiance left in him. He had been robbed of it. Lied to. Told he would be set free, and tasted said freedom, before being taken right back to his own personal hell. Even if, presently, his own personal hell did include medical care and as much oatmeal as he could eat. Which was rather a lot, considering.

Gavin was feeling more like himself again, surrender notwithstanding, when Alessandro Dragonetti entered the room. "Ah, Brother Kincade. They told me you were doing better."

Normally Gavin would have hissed something about not needing to be healed were it not for him, but he held his tongue and simply nodded.

"Wonderful. This means you should be well enough to face your tribunal tomorrow." There was a secretive glint in Dragonetti's eye that Gavin was not too far gone to miss.

"T...tribunal?"

"That's right. For the death of Archbishop Coronati as well as thirteen other well respected bretheren."

"I...thirteen!?" Had he really killed that many Templar simply trying to escape? Trying to help others escape? Was he really responsible for the death of fourteen people? Maybe he did deserve this. Gavin lifted his eyes to meet Dragonetti's. The man wasn't wearing a hood. They were beyond purification now. Beyond asking for redemption. Gavin would be tried and found guilty. He was guilty. And then they would be done with him.

It was better than the rest of his life in a cage. It had taken so long for him to pull himself out of that cage even after he had escaped. He had lost over a year of his life, reverting to basic instincts and forgetting what it meant to be human. If they chose to kill him now, he would accept that. He wouldn't fight it. He didn't care to. "I'm ready now."

That was certainly not what Dragonetti had expected. For someone to want to rush their judgement was unfathomable. "Now?"

"I know what you'll decide. I don't deny what I did. And there's no way out of here for me." He knew they weren't in London anymore. He was in Rome, which was just the very worst place he could possibly be. "You lied when you promised me my freedom. And if that's how it's going to be, I want to get this over with."

Dragonetti watched Gavin and then he shook his head. "You'll have to wait until the tribunal is ready. We are not here for your whim, whether you crave to be reunited with the Devil or not."

"He's not the...argh. Where is Peter?" Gavin hadn't seen him, and he was worried. Very worried, that his actions had caused Peter suffering. "What did you do to him?"

"That is not your concern. Your tribunal will ne held tomorrow. We have other urgent matters to attend to." Dragonetti nodded his head once, and then he took his leave of Gavin, exiting the secure room by passing through the three guards who held long, silver axes in their hands. Gavin sighed and he leaned back against his mattress. One more day and he would be free of them. It was going to be a long night.
