Plans (Joe, Jordan)
Being the father of a gay son had meant that Joe had worried for his safety when he got on the train each day. He worried about things that parents of straight kids didn't necessarily think about. Was his son going to be beaten up because he didn't want to have sex with girls? Was he going to contract some horrible disease? Was he going to grow old alone because he couldn't find anyone to be with? Every parents feared those things, but Joe figured, and with reason, that he feared them more. The one thing he had never entertained a thought to fear, was Julian getting someone pregnant as a teenager. He was gay.
Apparently Joe had also overlooked the fear that his son would become a heroin addict, lose his mind for a time, and end up sleeping with people for money. Silly Joe.
Now his son had a child, and one that required a lot of medical care at that. Julian had been blindsided by the revelation and Joe had done a very good job of being there for him. But now Joe was in his bedroom, and the fact that he was now a grandfather had just hit home and it scared him too. He had just had a daughter a week ago. That his son would become a first time father in the same week that he had become one for the second time was just...too much. Joe had reassured Julian that he would take care of things. That was what Joe did. But deep, down inside, Joe wondered if he could. He hadn't gone to University. He had a job, but it wasn't a high paying position, and now Jordan was on maternity leave. And with two babies in the house eventually, how were they going to cope with that? And money? And Julian still having a life because Joe refused to let Julian give up his dream of attending University himself. He'd almost lost his dream to drugs, and now that Julian had it back, Joe wasn't going to let anything take it away.
A few months ago, there had been only Julian. And a few months before that, Julian hadn't even been there. It had been Jordan and Joe alone. And now there would be two babies. And two boys. And Joe and Jordan would have to juggle all of it and Joe, for on, didn't know if they were up to it...
"Jaida is asleep." Jordan commented, walking into the bedroom looking sleepy.
Joe looked up and he gave his wife a tired smile. "Good. I'll put her to sleep when she wakes up at 4 am, deal?"
Jordan chuckled and she nodded. "Deal. So. Our son was a whore, hmm?"
"Seem so." Joe groaned. "Jordan, you should have seen the baby. She was...I don't understand how that woman just left her. You know the doctor told me the baby was born addicted to heroin. They got her off of it. They're not entirely sure how she survived, but she did. They don't know if there will be long-lasting side effects... I...I didn't tell Jules."
"We can tell him when we know for sure. How is he, Joseph?" Jordan looked worried as she took a seat next to her husband.
"Freaked. But when he looked at her...he was a father. Pretty much only then... Jordan, our Julian is a father."
"And you're a grandaddy!" Jordan smiled at him.
"Argh, don't remind me! I just realised that like five minutes ago and you're giving me flashbacks..."
"Joe...my darling, Joe. Everything is going to be fine. We'll take care of our boy's girl when he can't. Julian's a kid. He'll still get to be a kid. He's lucky he has us." Jordan winked at Joe. "As for us, I'll get another job. I've been thinking about going back to teaching for a long time. It'd be more money."
"But...you'll be gone, you said you didn't want to be..."
"Joe, you work from home now. And when you have to go away, the boys can help me, and Adam can come over...it'll be fine. We'll need the money. And I loved teaching."
"I just don't want you to do anything that-"
"Hush." Jordan soothed. "Our son needs us now. I'm going back to teaching. When the new school year begins. Until then, I'll do some editing work. We'll get through this. And tomorrow, I want to see my granddaughter."
Joe smiled, and he took his wife into his arms. She was so amazingly accomplished at calming him down... "I want you to see her too." Joe muttered into her hair. "She's gorgeous."
